Nattokinase – the super enzyme from Japan

What can this natural blood thinner do?

It is considered one of the healthiest foods in the world and one of the reasons for the longevity and good cardiovascular health of the Japanese: natto. This vegetable cheese made from fermented soybeans is a true powerhouse; it is easy to digest and, in addition to various enzymes, also contains many proteins, vitamins, soy isoflavones, and probiotic bacteria. Above all, the enzyme nattokinase has been on everyone’s lips in our part of the world as a natural blood thinner, especially since the pandemic. But does this super enzyme live up to its promises? And why is its interaction with dandelion so special?

Superfood and national treasure from Japan

Since ancient times, people in Japan have sworn by the vegetarian cheese called natto – as an everyday dish, but also as a traditional remedy. This plant-based cheese is fermented from cooked or steamed soybeans with the help of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis.

It was not until 1987 that Japanese researcher Hiroyuki Sumi discovered the reason for natto’s outstanding health properties: the protein-splitting enzyme nattokinase. Since then, nattokinase has attracted great attention from research and naturopathy. Not least because numerous Western studies confirm its many positive effects on our health, especially cardiovascular health. (1) (2) (3)

Like the body’s own enzymes plasmin and thrombin, which are involved in blood clotting, nattokinase belongs to the group of proteases, i.e. enzymes that split proteins into smaller building blocks. When taken orally, it passes through the wall of the small intestine and enters the bloodstream, where it is involved in many metabolic processes throughout the entire organism.

Nattokinase, a natural blood thinner

The most important property of nattokinase: thanks to its strong fibrinolytic and thrombolytic activity (i.e. the body’s own dissolution of blood clots), the enzyme contributes to the breakdown of fibrin-containing, unwanted cellular components and thus to the maintenance of normal blood flow. (4) (5) (6)

Nattokinase therefore offers great hope for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with increased blood coagulability. The insidious thing about these conditions is that functional clotting problems often lead to internal damage long before the actual disease becomes noticeable. (4) Here, nattokinase offers a range of health benefits through its blood pressure-lowering, anti-atherosclerotic, lipid-lowering, antiplatelet, and neuroprotective properties (1).

In naturopathy, the enzyme is therefore used, among other things, to stabilize blood pressure (7), to prevent or treat varicose veins, thrombosis, heart attack, and stroke, in cases of arteriosclerosis (8), but also for diseases that are not necessarily associated with the circulatory system, such as fibromyalgia, endometriosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, or infertility. Good to know!

The water-insoluble protein fibrin is a kind of “glue” with which our body stops bleeding and seals wounds. However, fibrin can also clump together with platelets, which can lead to thrombosis, heart attack, or stroke. Numerous in vitro experiments and clinical studies suggest that nattokinase can prevent and even dissolve such blood clots, thereby helping to improve blood circulation and the oxygen supply to tissues.

Further health benefits of nattokinase

In many areas, nattokinase research is still in its infancy. Further exciting results can be expected in the coming years.

Inflammation and oxidative stress

More and more evidence points to a comprehensive interaction between the body’s own inflammatory and coagulation systems, which strongly influence each other. Oxidative stress is considered one of the main triggers for changes in blood clotting and for inflammation.

In addition to its anticoagulant properties, studies have also shown that nattokinase has a positive effect on inflammation and oxidative stress. It could help reduce inflammation in the body and thus prevent and treat associated diseases.

Liver health

There is evidence that nattokinase improves liver function and supports it in breaking down and eliminating harmful substances. Through its anti-inflammatory properties, the enzyme could thus help protect the liver and reduce chronic liver inflammation (hepatitis) as well as liver fibrosis.

Hair growth

Recent studies indicate that nattokinase could help promote hair health. By improving blood circulation in the scalp, the hair follicles are better supplied with nutrients and oxygen, which in turn could have a positive effect on hair growth.

Alzheimer’s

Recent studies suggest that nattokinase can also dissolve amyloid plaques in the brain, one of the main causes of Alzheimer’s. Depression, anxiety, and memory disorders could also be normalized by nattokinase.

Long COVID and post-vaccine syndrome

Since the pandemic, nattokinase has also been discussed in connection with Long COVID and post-vaccine syndrome. In an in vitro study conducted in 2022, cells were infected with the spike protein, the characteristic feature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. When nattokinase was subsequently added, the enzyme was able to break down the spike protein. However, it is still being discussed whether this finding can be transferred to the human body, i.e. to what extent orally administered nattokinase can specifically find and dissolve spike proteins there.

In addition, due to its special properties, nattokinase could help maintain or restore the normal flow properties of the blood in patients with Long COVID or post-vaccine syndrome and reduce inflammatory processes associated with the infection.

Interesting facts about natto

Natto is a traditional Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans. First, the soybeans are cooked and then Bacillus subtilis is added to start the fermentation process. The beans are then stored in a warm environment to complete fermentation. Natto has a tradition spanning more than a thousand years and is still prepared by many households and restaurants in Japan today. It is an integral part of Japanese food culture.

Nattokinase as a dietary supplement

Nattokinase is available on the market in various dosage forms, including capsules and powder. The enzyme is either extracted from fermented soybeans or produced in the laboratory using corresponding bacterial cultures, the latter often involving genetic engineering. As an alternative to soy, crab shells or chickpeas are also used in production.

The enzyme isolated and purified with the help of bacterial fermentation has no soy properties and therefore no allergens. If you suffer from a soy allergy and still have concerns, you should find out in advance exactly which food was used as the basis for the nattokinase.

A powerful duo: nattokinase and dandelion

A plant that every child knows and whose true healing power is often underestimated is the perfect partner for nattokinase: dandelion. The small yellow plant has a long tradition in naturopathy and folk medicine. Its root has been used for centuries to stimulate liver and gallbladder function as well as the digestive system, and for immunomodulation. The leaf is considered diuretic and is used as a digestive stimulant due to its bitter compounds. With the help of its natural plant compounds, dandelion also helps flush the kidneys and urinary tract, stimulate circulation, and neutralize acids in our blood. In this way, it helps with detoxification and the rapid elimination of unwanted substances.

Dandelion’s abilities are an essential and therefore extremely useful complement to the strong fibrinolytic properties of nattokinase. Conversely, nattokinase supports the nutritional spectrum of dandelion.

Two partners, then, that are ideally made for each other. Dandelion, known in rural tradition as “meadow ginseng,” has a powerful protective and activating function in liver metabolism, and the fermented product nattokinase is a particularly active enzyme with both digestive and systemic-metabolic effects.
