Vegan, slim and fit:
With these tips it works!

Article series: Healthy weight loss – made easy.

You live vegan, but still have a few pounds too many on your ribs? Then you’re in good company, because many people who live a 100% plant-based lifestyle suffer from obesity or carry around a little flab or two! Don’t misunderstand us, we are anything but advocates of model measurements. Quite the opposite! We think it’s better to have a few too many feel-good pounds than a BMI that’s too low and therefore unhealthy. But in some cases, too much is really too much… And in this case, so-called “slimming down” is a good solution, even as a vegan.

Overweight?
Despite or because of the vegan diet?

Many vegans will probably cry out indignantly, because why should you suffer from weight problems if you live without animal fats? Unfortunately, reality shows that you are not automatically thin or will not become thin if you live a completely plant-based diet. Moreover, an existing unfavourable body fat distribution is often accompanied by muscle wasting – triggered by protein deficiency – and other nutrient deficiencies. The result is not only excess kilos, but unfortunately often massive health problems that become apparent over time.

Our therapist and non-medical practitioner Nina Kohlmann deals with this issue on a daily basis and answers the following frequently asked questions:

Nina, for many vegans losing weight just doesn’t work.
Do you have a tip as to why this might be?

Nina: Oh yes, unfortunately we know the problem only too well from people who live vegan or vegetarian. And the exciting thing is again and again: There is a common denominator, which in most cases is also responsible for the failure.

Quite simply, people consume far too many carbohydrates and often snack on snacks in between. In many cases, a typical veggie day looks like this:

In the morning there is a sweet breakfast or a ready-made muesli with oat milk, at lunchtime a vegan bowl with rice, in the afternoon a piece of cake or fruit, in between one or two lattes and in the evening noodles & co.

At first glance, this may seem healthy, but at second glance it is simply too much for our pancreas and the associated insulin production. The constant “firing up” with high amounts of carbohydrates means that the body is constantly busy producing insulin and thus the blood sugar level is constantly running at full speed. The result: the body is constantly trying to get rid of the added glucose and thus has no chance to burn its stored fat cells. A dilemma, because unfortunately the permanent carbohydrate consumption in turn leads to a feeling of hunger… Fortunately, there is a simple way out of this vicious circle (also for non-vegans/vegetarians):

The ketogenic diet paired with sufficient exercise and intermittent fasting!

Okaaayyy… but ketogenic and vegan – so that contradicts itself completely. Or don’t they?

Nina: Now I actually have to smile a little, because this question is almost a classic! No wonder, because the classic ketogenic diet is always associated with high meat and fish consumption at the same time. Admittedly, meat and fish are often the main source of animal protein in the classic ketogenic diet. But ketogenic also means eating high-quality good fats and lots of healthy low-starch vegetables and fruit in moderation. So it’s actually perfect for vegan or vegetarian people.

The only problem is that replacing animal proteins with vegetable proteins does not work 1:1. Vegetable proteins, such as soy, deliver far too much nitrogen waste and thus deprive our body of the possibility of preferentially using fatty acids and ketone bodies for combustion. This is counterproductive as far as the desired effect is concerned – because unfortunately it tends to achieve the opposite!

At this point, however, there is a super-simple solution: Vegan amino acids such as those contained in our MyAMINO ®. There, 99% of the amino acids can be utilised by the body at just 0.4 kcl per piece and 1% nitrogen waste. I know that for many this is dry matter and not tangible, so perhaps a brief example: As a 24 to 39-year-old woman with an office job, little physical exertion and the desire to lose weight, I would actually have to eat 2.3 kg of tofu to achieve the same protein utilisation capacity of 20 pieces of MyAMINO®. Not to mention the calories and the fact that you can’t lose weight with such immense amounts of tofu.

But of course, the rest of the diet and exercise must also be coordinated, and this also applies to non-vegans! The great thing about protein and MyAMINO® is that you don’t have to suffer from hunger, you are pleasantly satiated and, most importantly, you are well supplied with all nutrients. Because health always comes first. What I can promise, by the way: With a strict hyperketogenic diet plan, the desired ketogenic metabolism will be achieved much faster and better!

Are you sure? That really helps you lose weight? Why and especially how long does it take then until my pounds melt away?

Nina (laughing): That works – definitely! Above all, it helps to boost the desired fat burning. A fact that many other diet variants completely miss, because often people only lose water and valuable muscle mass.  But above all, this approach takes into account the issue of supporting detoxification – which, by the way, is extremely important because toxins can be stored in the fatty tissue. This is because the almost non-existent nitrogen loss from MyAMINO® results in a high degree of organ relief, e.g. in our liver – one of our central metabolic organs!

If the liver is relieved, it can devote itself to other things, such as toxins, which are usually stored in the fatty tissue and can be automatically mobilised during weight loss. In other words: If you lose weight, the stored “toxins” in the body are automatically released. This is often the case, by the way, when you suddenly become moody or complain of headaches. But don’t worry, it will pass quickly and with the described mix you can lose weight efficiently, gently, organ-relieving and vegan.

All clear or maybe not …
If you get stuck, where do you find support, Nina?
.

Nina: I know, that’s a lot of input! And maybe one or the other point is still unclear. But don’t worry, we don’t leave those who want to lose weight – no matter whether they live vegan or not – who want to eat a ketogenic diet in combination with MyAMINO® alone.

10 Vegan Power Keto Tips

  1. Take breaks from eating:
In general, keep at least 4.5 hours of meal breaks – that is, even without snacks – between your main meals.
  2. Intermittent fasting:
Intermittent fasting, i.e. a meal break of at least 12 hours – preferably even 16 hours – is best practiced with the inclusion of the night’s rest. Your organism can then rest and draw its energy from the fat cells.
  3. Low-starch vegetables:
It’s best to eat vegetables with a low glycaemic load. You can find a table on our website here for reference
  4. Reduction of carbohydrates:
If you want to lose weight ketogenically, there is simply no way around it: A maximum of 50 g of carbohydrates should be consumed during the reduction phase. We know: Especially as a vegan or vegetarian, it’s hard, but it pays off. Promise!
  5. MyAMINO® as a protein substitute:
As a vegan:in you urgently need a high-quality protein source. You should consume – depending on physical strain, age, gender – between 10 to 20 pellets. We can tell you your exact requirements after consultation.
  6. A lot of good water:
Make sure that you drink enough and, above all, good pure water every day. This not only helps against hunger pangs, but is immensely important for your cells and of course also effectively supports weight loss… but what do we say: Water is life and essential!
  7. High-quality fats:
Eating fat and losing weight? Admittedly, this sounds contradictory – but it is important in the context of the ketogenic diet. Because your engine gets its energy from so-called ketone bodies, which in turn get their energy from burning fat. Attention: The type of fat is very important. You can find out more here.
  8. Get off the couch:
You don’t have to become the second Jane Fonda, but exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle and weight loss. Not only to lose calories, but also to become firmer – by the way, MyAMINO® helps you to turn flabby tissue into beautiful firm body silhouettes!
  9. Sufficient sleep:
A good and sufficient sleep is of course immensely important, but did you know that too little sleep is often associated with weight gain? So, hit the hay and get some rest!
  10. Laugh a lot and be positive:
Yes, this really helps – in all situations, of course. Especially when you’re struggling to lose weight. That’s quite normal and happens to everyone who wants to lose weight. So don’t give up – we can do it 🙂 .
