Nattokinase – the super enzyme from Japan

What can the natural blood thinner do?

It is considered one of the healthiest foods in the world and one of the reasons for the longevity and good cardiovascular health of the Japanese: natto. The vegetable cheese made from fermented soya beans is a real powerhouse, easy to digest and contains various enzymes, as well as lots of protein, vitamins, soya isoflavones and probiotic bacteria. Since the pandemic, the enzyme nattokinase has been the talk of the town as a natural blood thinner, even in our part of the world. But does this super enzyme deliver what it promises? And what makes its interaction with dandelion so special?

Superfood and national treasure from Japan

Since ancient times, people in Japan have sworn by the vegetarian cheese called natto – as an everyday food, but also as a traditional remedy. The plant-based cheese is fermented from boiled or steamed soybeans using the bacterium Bacillus subtilis.

It was not until 1987 that Japanese researcher Hiroyuki Sumi discovered the reason for natto’s outstanding health properties: the protein-splitting enzyme nattokinase. Since then, nattokinase has attracted a great deal of attention from researchers and naturopaths. Not least because numerous Western studies have confirmed its many positive effects on our health, especially cardiovascular health. (1) (2) (3)

Like the two endogenous enzymes involved in blood clotting, plasmin and thrombin, nattokinase belongs to the group of proteases, i.e. enzymes that break down proteins into smaller building blocks. When taken orally, it penetrates the wall of the small intestine and enters the bloodstream, where it is involved in many metabolic processes throughout the body.

Nattokinase, a natural blood thinner

The most important property of nattokinase: thanks to its strong fibrinolytic and thrombolytic activity (i.e. the body’s own dissolution of blood clots), the enzyme contributes to the breakdown of unwanted cell components containing fibrin, thus helping to maintain normal blood flow. (4) (5) (6)

Nattokinase therefore offers great hope for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with increased blood clotting. This is because the insidious nature of these diseases: Functional coagulation disorders often lead to internal damage long before the actual disease becomes apparent. (4) Nattokinase offers a range of health benefits thanks to its antihypertensive, anti-atherosclerotic, lipid-lowering, antiplatelet and neuroprotective properties (1).

In naturopathy, the enzyme is therefore used to stabilise blood pressure (7), to prevent or treat varicose veins, thrombosis, myocardial infarction and stroke, arteriosclerosis (8), but also for conditions not necessarily related to the circulatory system, such as fibromyalgia, endometriosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis or infertility. (9)

Good to know!

The water-insoluble protein fibrin is a kind of “glue” that our body uses to stop bleeding and to hold wounds together. However, fibrin can also clump together with blood platelets, which can lead to thrombosis, heart attack or stroke. Numerous in vitro experiments and clinical studies suggest that nattokinase can prevent and even dissolve such blood clots, thereby helping to improve blood circulation and oxygen supply to tissues.

Proven use in naturopathy

This is because these diseases are so insidious: Functional coagulopathies often lead to internal damage long before the actual disease becomes apparent. Other health benefits of nattokinase

Nattokinase research is still in its infancy in many areas. More exciting results are expected in the coming years.

Inflammation and oxidative stress

There is increasing evidence that the body’s inflammatory and coagulation systems interact with each other. Oxidative stress is one of the major triggers of altered coagulation and inflammation.

In addition to its anticoagulant properties, studies have also shown that nattokinase has a beneficial effect on inflammation and oxidative stress. (10) It may help reduce inflammation in the body and prevent and treat related diseases.

Liver Health

There is evidence that nattokinase improves liver function, helping it to break down and eliminate harmful substances. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, the enzyme may help protect the liver and reduce chronic liver inflammation (hepatitis) and liver fibrosis. (11)

Hair growth

Recent research suggests that nattokinase may help promote hair health. By improving blood flow to the scalp, hair follicles are better supplied with nutrients and oxygen, which could have a positive effect on hair growth.

Alzheimer’s disease

Recent studies suggest that nattokinase may also dissolve amyloid plaques in the brain, a major cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Depression, anxiety and memory disorders may also be normalised by nattokinase. (12)

Long COVID and post-vaccine syndrome

Since the pandemic, nattokinase has also been discussed in relation to long COVID or post-vaccination syndrome. In an in vitro study in 2022, cells were infected with the spike protein, the characteristic feature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. When nattokinase was then added, the enzyme was able to degrade the spike protein. (13) However, it is still being discussed whether this finding can be transferred to the human body, i.e. to what extent orally administered nattokinase can specifically find and degrade spike proteins in the human body.

In addition, the special properties of nattokinase could help to maintain or restore the normal flow properties of the blood in patients with long COVID or post-vaccine syndrome and reduce the inflammatory processes associated with the infection. (14)

Interesting facts about natto

Natto is a traditional Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans. The soybeans are first cooked and then Bacillus subtilis is added to start the fermentation process. The beans are then stored in a warm environment to complete the fermentation. Natto has a tradition of over a thousand years and is still prepared in many homes and restaurants in Japan. It is an integral part of Japanese cuisine.

Nattokinase as a food supplement

Nattokinase is available on the market in various forms, including capsules and powder. The enzyme is either extracted from fermented soybeans or produced in the laboratory using appropriate bacterial cultures, often using genetic engineering in the latter case. As an alternative to soya, crab shells or chickpeas are also used in the production process. (15)

The enzyme isolated and purified by bacterial fermentation has no soya properties and therefore no allergens. (16) If you suffer from a soy allergy and are still concerned, you should find out in advance exactly which food is used as the basis for nattokinase.

Powerful duo: nattokinase and dandelion

A plant that every child knows and whose true healing power is often underestimated is the perfect partner for nattokinase: dandelion. This small, yellow plant has a long tradition in natural and folk medicine. The root has been used for centuries to stimulate liver and gallbladder function, as well as the digestive system and to modulate the immune system. The leaf is considered a diuretic and is used as a digestive stimulant due to its bitter constituents. Dandelion’s natural phytochemicals also help to flush the kidneys and urinary tract, stimulate circulation and neutralise acids in the blood. It therefore helps to purify and quickly eliminate unwanted substances.

Dandelion’s abilities are a fundamental and therefore extremely useful complement to the powerful fibrinolytic properties of nattokinase. Conversely, nattokinase supports the nutritional spectrum of dandelion.

Two ideal partners. Dandelion, known as “meadow ginseng”, has a powerful protective and activating function in liver metabolism, and the fermentation product nattokinase is a particularly active enzyme with both digestive and systemic metabolic effects.
